Do you have chewer? If you do that is completely normal.
Like babies, puppies experience aches and pains as their adult teeth come through so, they get the urge to chew things.
Chewing is a natural behaviour for all dogs. Some will chew as a coping mechanism for anxiety or stress, while others are simply discovering the world around them by means of their mouth.
Of course, this can be extremely frustrating for dog owners. Particularly if your pooch is chewing through your phone charger or favourite pair of kicks.
Here are 5 steps to help stop a dog from chewing.
- Pup-proof your home. Make sure there is nothing obvious left out for your dog to chew on.
- Provide chew toys. If they have a designated chew toy they will be less likely to hunt for their own.
- Regular exercise. A well-exercised dog will be less likely to be bored and mischievous.
- Avoid rough play. If you encourage a dog to bite and chew - they will.
- Teach your dog what is ok to chew or not. Let your pooch know when they are chewing something they shouldn’t be - this has to be done whilst they are doing it and not after. Additionally praise them for chewing their designated chew toys.
